  'states are locations ' is part of an extensive metaphor for understanding not only states of being , but also  changes,actions,causes and means.

To be in any state of conciousness,in love,fear,anxiety,ectasy is to exist within a specific place. This place can be mapped and remembered. A place has a boundary which can be crossed and then a different state is entered. The boundary itself exists as a location between the two states which can be explored.
